Readings and Reception with the TRA Writing Group
The Writing Group was among the early successes of TRA. It commenced in the early months of the life of the association and has been in existence constantly since. It meets about 8/9 times per year in college. Generally, attendance is about 8 from +/- 10 regulars. Meetings are from 2.30 to 4.30 pm on Monday afternoons. We are open to aspiring writers at all levels and all genres.
During Covid, in March 2021, the writing group presented its work at an online TRA meeting. The group chose to focus on readings from members’ writing, which included extracts from varied prose pieces, a campus novel (with footnotes), short stories, poetry, an academic memoir, and more. Some of this material has since been published. Reactions from the TRA membership were surprisingly positive and encouraged the committee to revisit the work of the group, this time in the setting of the common room with areception. It is expected that 6-8 members will present short readings over about 50 min. A programme will be circulated prior to the event.
The event will take place on Tue 20th of May in the common room from 4-6 pm and will be accompanied by a modest wine reception.
Event overview
Seven members of the writing group will read from their own work. The session will start with a prose piece, a slightly off-centre view on how homes become part of our lives. Other prose pieces follow with unusual takes on resurrection and shopping, as well as an extract from a campus novel. The prose pieces will be punctuated by a highly varied selection of poetry, ranging from short pithy four liners to extracts from a many faceted ‘epic’ length poem on the Covid pandemic, which was written contemporaneously.
