Dear Members, you are invited to join geologist Ian Sanders for a lecture to the Trinity Retirement Association entitled ‘Meteorites and the birth of the Solar system’.
The lecture is scheduled to take place via Zoom video link on Tuesday 9th February, 2021 at 2pm.
Ian Sanders recently retired from the Department of Geology, TCD. His main research interests are the metamorphism and exhumation of rocks from enormous depths, and the events of the first few million years of the Solar System inferred from evidence preserved in meteorites.
Meteorites are pieces of bizarre sedimentary and igneous rock from space that are far older than any rock on Earth; they hold clues to the events surrounding the birth of the Solar System. In this talk Ian will describe and explain some of their remarkable features in the context of space and time and how fragments of asteroids occasionally jump spontaneously into elliptical orbits that bring them closer to the Sun, crossing Earth’s orbit and crashing here as meteorites.
If you wish to join us for the lecture please register using the website ticket system below. Registrations for this event close at midnight 7th February 2021 – registrations are not possible after this date and time.
There is no charge for this event.
Prior to the event a link and other information required for Zoom will be sent by email to all those who have registered.
We hope you can join us on the 9th February.
All the best
