Lavery on location – a guided visit to the Exhibition in the National Gallery

December 6, 2023 @ 10:00 - 13:00

| €6.50

Sir John Lavery 1856 – 1941

Members are invited to visit and enjoy this Exhibition of some of Sir John Lavery’s work.  Some of us may know him best because his portrait of his second wife, Hazel, adorned the Irish púnt in the Good Old  Pre-Euro days.  And there is currently a lovely painting of his daughter in her First Communion dress on view in the  Permanent Exhibition space of the Gallery.

Sir John Lavery was from Belfast, of humble origins, but he spent some of his youth in Scotland and attended Art College there.  He made serious money painting portraits of the great and the good in London and that is what he is possibly best known for.  But he loved travelling. He studied in Paris, and indeed spent 19 years on and off in Tangier.

In this Exhibition the focus is on a selection of the many paintings he created which were not portraits .  We can see some of the people, places and events that he encountered during his travels.  Highlights include A Garden in France (1898) and On the bridge at Grez (1884).   Paintings from his visits to Tangier, Venice, Cannes and New York also feature.

This event is for members only.  The cost per ticket is €6.50.

We will meet for coffee at 10.30 and the tour will start at 11.00.

There is also another tour on Wednesday 13th of December at 10.30 – see next event.

Booking opens on November 22nd at 9am and closes on December 4th at 11.00pm
