The Association has booked a guided tour of Kilmainham Gaol for Tuesday 6th September 2016 at 11am.
Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe, covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland’s emergence as a modern nation from 1780s to the 1920s. Attractions include a major exhibition detailing the political and penal history of the prison and its restoration. The tour of the prison includes an audio-visual show.
Meeting Point
Kilmainham Gaol is located on Inchicore Road, close to the junction with South Circular Road. Following extensive refurbishment of Kilmainham Courthouse, this building is now part of the Gaol complex and is the main entrance to the Gaol.
The Courthouse is also on Inchicore Road and is directly opposite the Hilton Hotel. There is a café/terrace at the Hilton where we can meet for coffee from 10.15am or some of you may choose the Lime Tree Café (about 100 metres further along the Inchicore Road).
The Gaol has requested that groups arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the tour so we should assemble at the entrance at 10.45am. The guided tour lasts about an hour.
Tickets
Thirty-five places are available on the tour and tickets cost €3, payable on the day. Each member may bring one guest. If you would like to book a ticket, you can book online on the website below or send an email to info@tcdretired.ie.
Public Transport directions
If you are travelling by public transport, you can take bus 13 or 40 from College Green. When standing at Front Gate looking up Dame Street, the bus stop is the first on the left. Ask the bus driver to let you off at the stop for the Gaol (the bus stop is at a Library). When you get off the bus, walk back in the direction that the bus travelled, take a left turn at the lights, walk less than 100m and you will see the Gaol and the Hilton Hotel on your left.
Car Parking
Car parking is available in the grounds of the adjacent Royal Hospital Kilmainham (€2 for three hours).
