Walking Group – Tour of Hidden Dublin – Postponed

November 1, 2016 @ 11:00 - 14:00

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have to postpone this walk.  We hope to offer an alternative at the same date and time, and information on the new event will be notified shortly.

——————————–

This walk will start at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Parnell Square.  We will meet for coffee from 10.30am in the Gallery’s café and the walk/tour will start from the foyer of the Gallery at 11am.  The walk will take about two and a half hours, including stops.

We will start with the exhibition of the finest works of Ireland’s renowned stained-glass artists i.e Harry Clarke, Evie Hone, James Scanlon, Wilhemina Geddes and Paul Bony.  We will see John Keats epic love poem The Eve of St. Agnes depicted in 22 stained glass panels by Harry Clarke.

Next is Blessington St Basin, the last remaining of the canal reservoirs that supplied water to the city in the 18th and 19th century.  The Basin has been fully restored and is now a beautiful park and wildfowl reserve.

How many people know where the mainline terminus of the now defunct Great Western Railway is located? The terminus is regarded as one of the finest public buildings in the city, yet few people know of its existence or location.

Have you ever seen the remarkable sight of The Hungry Tree?  It has to be seen to be believed.

Next we will visit Dublin’s oldest Georgian Street (1720s) which has been the location for many TV drama series e.g. Strumpet City, Inspector George Gently, Foyles War & Albert Nobbs.

We will then proceed to the historic Green St Courthouse.  Opened in 1797, the courthouse was the location of the trials of many Irish patriots including Robert Emmet, Wolfe Tone, Lord Edward Fitzgerald and John Mitchel. Between 1970 and 1995 it was the location of the non-jury Special Criminal Court where many IRA related trials were held, including that of the Herrema kidnapping. Now closed, the courthouse has been used as a location for many films requiring an original 18th century courthouse.

Have you ever walked through the Victorian Dublin Fruit & Vegetable Market?  We will on 1st November!

Then there is St Mary’s i.e The Church. This restored church (1697) is now one of Dublin’s popular eating venues. The location of the christening of Wolfe Tone and Sean O’Casey, it is also the church in which Arthur Guinness was married. See the magnificent Renatus Harris organ (c1730) which was regularly played by George Frederick Handel, of Messiah fame, who lived in nearby Abbey Street. John Wesley preached his first Irish sermon here in 1747.

And finally, how about Dublin’s newest café – The Tram Cafe!!
