Turner is particular renowned for elevating the status of landscape painting to”high art” by flouting convention and incorporating innovative techniques into his allegorical depictions of breathtaking scenery.  Inevitably he was applauded and derided by contemporary critics in equal measure and today he is regarded as the pre-eminent landscape painter of the Romantic Period.
