A historical tour of Dundrum Village on November 6th at 11:00an.
The village dates back to the early 1800’s and some of the existing buildings on Main Street date back to the mid 1800’s
The historical tour of Dundrum Village will introduce us to the origins and development of the Village and the origins of the name Dundrum itself. We will see some of the heritage buildings in and around the village and hear stories of their former life and the lives of those who occupied them and perhaps hear something of their doubtful future and efforts to save them. The tour will, time permitting, bring us to the site of the little known Dundrum Castle that is believed to have had fortifications built back in the 13th century and where the remains of a later (16th century) castle structure still exist.
The tour will end close to the Dundrum Town Centre Shopping Centre, the largest shopping centre in Ireland, where there are many opportunities for lunch or other refreshments.
The tour will be led by local historian and Dundrum native, John Lennon. John has been leading these tours for many years and, in more recent years, his tours have been part of the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Summer Heritage Season. As well as an extensive knowledge of the history and development of Dundrum, John has an interest in the architectural idiocyncrancies of the 19th century redbrick buildings, some of which he will share with us
This is a walking tour and. while the distance covered is not long, we will be standing for the duration and comfortable shoes are recommended,
