Abstract: This talk will firstly set the context for the current state of research into making concrete more sustainable globally by introducing one of Trinity Research centres – TrinityHaus – which focusses on construction innovation and sustainability.  Using the current challenges of re-using demolished concrete structures in new concrete buildings as an exemplar of its work, Roger will describe the innovations which have been and will be necessary to decarbonise the most used man-made material in the world – that is, concrete. No prior knowledge of concrete technology is necessary!

Biography of the Speaker: Roger West is Professor in Structural Engineering and the Director of TrinityHaus.  A Fellow of the College, he joined Trinity as a lecturer “for one year” to teach structural engineering to 180 “Fresh” engineers in 1985 after a number of years in the construction industry.  Almost four decades later retirement from teaching 300 “Fresh” engineers at Trinity has recently been accomplished. He has become very well known nationally and internationally for his work on innovations in concrete technology, amongst other topics, delivering more than 20 keynotes on four continents. He has successfully worked on recruitment on College’s behalf and on his own research links in India for over a decade.
