This is another walk around Dublin and on this occasion, we will be based on the southside of the city. As a similar walk held in January was very popular, we are limiting this walk to members of the Association.
We will meet from 10.30am in the Chester Beatty Café. The walk will commence from the foyer of the Chester Beatty Library at 11am and will take about two hours, including stops.
While we are in the Chester Beatty Library, we will take the opportunity to see the earliest surviving New Testament texts in the world.
Following that, we will take some time to look around the grounds of Dublin Castle which lie on the site of the Black Pool (Dubh Linn). The grounds are very popular and contain the Special Olympics Memorial, the Veronica Guerin Memorial and also the Garda Memorial Garden.
From there, we will walk the short distance to Smock Alley Theatre, which originally opened in 1662. Then we go along Fishamble Street to Christ Church Cathedral, where we can see the Homeless Jesus sculpture in the grounds of the Cathedral.
St Werburgh’s Church was constructed in the twelfth century, though it has undergone many renovations throughout its history, including the addition of the present façade in the 1700s.
We will then proceed to the Old City Walls and the (old) St Audoen’s Church. From there we will walk to John’s Lane Church which has three large Harry Clarke windows. Nearby is the former premises of Power’s Distillery. We will pass St Catherine’s Church and then walk through the Liberties to St Patrick’s Cathedral. The adjacent Marsh’s Library was built in 1701 and was the first public library in Dublin.
Disclaimer / Footwear / Outerwear Please note that if you participate in the walk, you must take full responsibility for yourself and be aware that you participate at your own risk. Best wishes
