Patrick Reel (b. 1935): Navan (Ireland) Artist “The man who makes great art in a room above a sweet shop”
Patrick Reel was a very prominent abstract artist in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Due to circumstances, he produced very little abstract art again until after 2005, when he was aged in his early seventies. In the intervening period though he produced very fine realism work, mostly for sale in Navan and surrounds. He came to national prominence again, with A Retrospective of his work, ‘A Life in Paint’, in Dublin Castle State Apartment Galleries, 10 March to 1 August 2022. Artist Michelle Boyle worked with John O’Hagan and Patrick and Esther Reel in assembling the works for the exhibition and wrote a catalogue The Story of Artist Patrick Reel. The Office of Public Works also got behind the project
Reel painted in two distinct styles. The early paintings are portraits, family groups, children and pastoral scenes. His later paintings are abstract. Many have motifs from the ancient pre-Christian monuments and landscapes of Meath or Tuscany, where he has also painted.
